Canon EOS 60D and tripod
This was the first total lunar eclipse I actually tried to fully observe, let alone photograph. At 3 am I put down a picnic blanket at the elementary school sports field and set up a small tripod so that I could sit on the ground while I worked. For a good hour I wasn't sure if the weather was going to cooperate. I basically had to wait for breaks in the clouds and take as many shots as possible. The composite image here represents the first half of the eclipse, after which the clouds closed in and the temperature dropped enough that I suddenly found myself sitting in a thick layer of ground-hugging fog. The owls I heard hooting throughout the night made it all very spooky.
